Behavior consultations

Individual consultations in Geneva

Despite your best efforts in training, your dog may display behaviors that need the expertise of a professional. Even if you’ve already taken puppy classes or basic dog training, certain behaviors may require a deeper understanding and a tailored approach.

Behavior consultations are designed for behaviors like:

  • Reactivity toward other dogs or humans (on leash or off leash)
  • Fear or anxiety
  • Separation anxiety or difficulty being left alone
  • Destructive behaviors
  • Excessive barking
  • House-soiling and other house manners
  • Handling or vet visit challenges
  • And more…

Every behavior has an underlying cause. A behavior consultation will get to the root of the issue. We’ll work together to understand the behavior, assess the environment, and develop a customized plan that’s respectful to your dog and effective in solving the problem. This approach ensures that both you and your dog feel understood, supported, and confident as we move forward.

Personalised program

Following our initial assessment, we will design a personalised plan tailored to your dog’s specific needs. This plan will be implemented through one-on-one practical lessons that focus on achieving the desired results in real-life situations.

To ensure maximum effectiveness, all of our lessons are conducted privately, either in the comfort of your home, in your dog’s natural outdoor environment, or at our secure, fenced training grounds in Satigny, when necessary. This personalized approach allows us to address your dog’s behavior in the settings where the challenges arise.

Every lesson will include:

  • A detailed written summary sent by email after each lesson to help you track progress and reinforce learning
  • Consistent support to ensure your dog’s behavior modification plan is successful and sustainable

We believe that individualised dog training in a familiar setting is essential for addressing behavioral issues effectively, leading to long-term improvements in your dog’s behavior.

Supporting Dogs in Pain

Research by Daniel Mills et al. (2020) has highlighted the strong link between pain and behaviours that are often perceived as “undesirable” in dogs. Veterinary clinics involved in the study reported that behavioural problems observed during consultations were associated with chronic pain in 23% to 82% of cases. The medical conditions most commonly linked to these situations are primarily orthopaedic, but may also include ear disease, dermatological conditions, gastrointestinal disorders, or dental pain.

The following list presents some behavioural signs that may indicate discomfort or pain. This list is not exhaustive:

  • Vocalisations
  • Changes in attitude: withdrawal, avoidance of contact, fatigue, reduced appetite, apathy, agitation, separation-related distress, intolerance to touch, fears, house-soiling, destructive behaviours, excessive barking
  • Behavioural signs: excessive licking, distance-increasing aggression, nipping, increased resource guarding, repeated rubbing or scratching of a specific area of the body, excessive ingestion (for example grass eating), reactivity
  • Postural changes: immobility, a hunched posture, lowered head, abdominal tension
  • Reduced mobility: limping or any unusual gait may indicate injury or joint or muscular discomfort.

Through my extensive continuing education and qualifications, I have developed an in-depth understanding of canine anatomy and physiological systems. This knowledge allows me to recognise potential underlying discomfort or pain that may be contributing to the behaviour we observe.

Identifying these possible underlying factors is an important step in understanding the dog as a whole and ensuring that behavioural support takes into account both the emotional and physical well-being of the dog.
